The Road to Super Bowl XLIX--The Halftime Show/Freebie Friday

Please forgive me for the late post as it was a very busy day at the office. Just bracing for the first significant storm of the winter. Hope to get to the gym tomorrow before it gets too nasty.

First up, it's our Freebie Friday giveaway. It's a printable, football-themed Tic-Tac-Toe game, which is a great activity for the kids while the parents are watching the game. You can either use the markers that are included or get creative with pennies or candy.

Today's topic is the Super Bowl halftime show. Like the commercials, many people prefer watch the game for the halftime show only.

During the early years of the game, college marching bands were the main form of entertainment: In many ways, the halftime show is the link to what is hot in pop culture. Carol Channing was the first major celebrity to perform at the halftime show (Super Bowl IV). As I mentioned earlier this week, the halftime shows of the 70s featured many themes, ranging from the Bicentennial to celebrating Hollywood. The singing group Up With People holds the record for the most performances (four), Below is a performance from Super Bowl XVI. (Trivia Question: Which well-known actress was once a member of Up With People? See answer below).

During the 1990s, it was decided that the themed performances of the 1970s and 1980s were too "dated" and popular musicians/singers were brought in to perform: New Kids on the Block, Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Tony Bennett, Tina Turner, U2, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Prince, Beyonce, and many others. Super Bowl XLVIII (2004) was remembered for the infamous Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake "wardrobe malfunction." Following the incident, there was a blacklist of Jackson's singles and music videos from several music channels. U2's performance at Super Bowl XXXVI (2002) was probably the most poignant because they paid tribute to those who perished in the 9/11 attacks. Last year, Billboard Magazine published a list of their top-ten halftime performance shows.

For Super Bowl XLIX, Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz are schedules to perform in the halftime show. Idina Menzel will sing the National Anthem.

It's time for today's Listmania:

Party Idea of the Day: This isn't about food or decorations but about fashion statements. Check out these funky nails in football colors (source: Indulgy).

Super Bowl Fun Fact of the Day: During Super Bowl XLVII, two brothers--John (Ravens) and Jim (49ers) Harbaugh-- were the head coaches of the opposing teams. This was the first time this occurred not only in the Super Bowl, but in a post-season game for all four professional sports (baseball, basketball, football, and hockey).

Today's Birthdays: Tiffany Thiessen (41), Marc Nelson (44), Mariska Hargitay (51), Anita Baker (57), Robin Zander (62), Richard Dean Anderson (65), Bill Cunningham (65), Anita Pointer (67), and Chita Rivera (82).

Holidaze: For the foodie in us, it's National Pie Day! This holiday was started in 1986 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Crisco shortening (which turns 100 this year!). My favorite pie is apple, what's yours?

Let's explore the lost art of putting pen to paper on National Handwriting Day! Why text when there are so many beautiful pens, pencils, and stationery out there. I love the look, feel, and smell of new paper. Before computers and cell phones, people actually wrote letters. I love getting mail and this is one of the reasons I belong to a few postcard collectors' clubs online.

Answer to the trivia question: Glenn Close

That's all for this evening. Have a great weekend!

Have a PRINTASTIC night!
